“The last months of steam traction at Grantham saw several care-worn A3 locomotives working out their last duties before being taken off to be scrapped. It was the pathos of this scene that inspired me, men and machines at the end of their working lives. The end of an era and the end for so many of a whole way of life. The grit and general neglect of the engine yard, that hazy light reflected in puddles, underline the essence of the story. This is the sort of steam engine picture I really love to paint.”
